After three days we know the finalists of the WTA Croatia Bol Open quarterfinals. Unfortunately, Croatia won’t have representatives in singles, nor in doubles. But there are always the girls from the neighbourhood that home fans can cheer on and enjoy top-notch tennis.
All favourites made it into quarter-finals, except for one: No.5 seed, Astra Sharma, the 23-year-old Australian who was ranked 92nd at WTA, lost against 18-year-old Slovenian, Kaje Juvan (WTA-131). The young player made quite a show and Sharma was helpless. In just 45 minutes, Juvan has solved the match and the final result was incredible: 6-1, 6-2 for Juvan. Thus Slovenia in the quarterfinals to have two representatives, young Juvan and the No1. seed and last year’s winner of the tournament, Tamar Zidansek who in the eight-finals over Switzerland Stefanie Vogele with 3 -6, 6-2, 6-3.
Croatia won’t have a representative in singles quarterfinals. No.8 seed player, Germany’s Laura Siegemund (WTA – 95) kicked Tena Lukas out from the tournament, and in the eighth-finals, she also won against Tereza Mrdeza (WTA – 199). Mrdeza was really close to great success. He won the first set with 6-3, the second one Siegemund barely saved with 7-6 (7-5), but in the third one home player was already exhausted and helpless (6-1 for Siegemund). After 2 hours and 48 minutes of playing, Mrdaza was supposed to recover from defeat and show up at doubles quarterfinals in the last match of the day.
She and Russian Fomina lost against Slovak-Romanian pair, Skamlova-Bogdan with 6-2, 6. Skamlova and Bogdan will pay against N0.2 seed doubles player Bacsinszky from Switzerland, and Minella from Luxembourg, the winner of the first new edition of Croatia Bol Open from 2016. In the thrilling match, these two won over Slovenian-Serbian pair Zidanšek-Danilovic (4-6, 6 -4, 4-10).
