Behind us is the second day of WTA Croatia Bol Open 2019, a bad day for home players.
Three Croatian tennis players, Jana Fett, Tena Lukas and Lea Bošković, were immediately defeated at their tournament openings. Jana Fett (WTA – 318) was defeated by Swiss Stefani Vogele (WTA – 97) with 6 – 2, 6 – 2, and after a few hours another defeat came. Paired with Switzerland’s Jill Teichmann she lost against Indonesian pair Gumulya – Rompies 6-3, 2-6, 14-12. Tight last set, they almost made it… unfortunately, they didn’t.
Lea Bošković (WTA – 462) was beaten by Germany – Anna – Lena Friedsman (WTA – 380) with 6-4, 6-4 and Tena Lukas (WTA – 286), in the last match by No.8 seed player Siegemund (WTA – 95th).
The home crowd will continue to track Tereza Mrdeza (WTA – 199). On Thursday, June 6, she will play in eighth finals against German player who defeated Lukas, Laura Siegemund. Paired with Alena Fomina from Russia today she won against pair Sharma – Strakhov. After the first lost set, in the next two, they were stronger and the final result was 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 for the Croatian-Russian pair. So on Thursday in addition to a singles match, she will be playing a night match against Bogdan – Skamlova on the main field around 20:30.
We were looking forward to see Zidanšek and Minella in action, last years winner and winner of first new edition tournament in 2016. Minella was doing good in the first set that she lost with 7-5, but in the second one, Slovenian player took over and the final result was 7-5, 6-2 for Zidanšek.
There was an interesting forth match at Buesun court when two players from Serbia collied: Aleksandra Krunic, winner of Croatia Bol Open 2017, No.3 seed player, ranked as the 76th player on WTA list, and eight years younger players, 18-year-old Olga Danilovic, ranked 125th. The first set ended with 7-6 and lower-ranked tennis player was providing excellent resistance. But in the second set, the strengths and concentrations ran out and in the end, the experienced Krunić celebrated with 7-6, 6-2.
At the end of the second day, no seed player no one managed to surprise any of the seed players. We are looking forward to the third day of the tournament when all eyes of the home audience will be focused on Mrdeza. Thursday will be a challenging and hard day for her.
