The first day of WTA Croatia Bol Open is behind us: 24 players, 11 matches on 3 courts! All seed players that have played on the first day of the tournament ‘survived it’.
No. 4 seed Schmiedlova from Slovakia (WTA – 90) had no problems with Dutchwoman Schoofs (WT – 161) and won with 6-1, 6-1. No. 6 seed young 21-year-old Switzerland’s Teichmann (WTA-93), beat seven-years older, experienced Romanian player Begu (WTA – 116) with 6-2, 6-1, and the seventh best player at the tournament, Bacsinszky also from Switzerland (WTA-94) secured a safe win against Tatishvili with 2:0 in sets, or 6-2, 6-2.
In the match against 23 – year – old player from Brazil, Beatriz Haddad Maia (WTA – 124), No. 2 seed Sorribes Tormo (WTA – 75) didn’t have it as easy as other leading players did. Haddad showed good resistance but eventually, she lost with 6- 3, 6-4. On the first day young WC 17-year-old, Mihaela Djakovic from Serbia played against Romanian player Ana Bogdan and was beaten with 6-1, 6-3. But due to the difference in WTA rank (Djakovic – 687 vs. Bogdan – 123) we can conclude that this was a valuable experience for the young player from Serbia and there is a bright future ahead of her. We’ll add that Djakovic paired with Croatian tennis player, 19-year-old Lea Bosnjak played against the Serbian-Slovenian pair Danilovic-Zidansek. The score was 0-6, 0-6 for the higher-ranked pair, Danilovic – Zidanšek.
On the first day, Croatian crowd could enjoy matches of another two domestic players. Unfortunately, Tena Lukas paired with Dalil Jakupović from Slovenia lost in the 1st round against Belgian-Dutch pair, Bonaventure – Bibiane Schoofs (6-4, 7-5). The match of the day was scheduled for 20:30 h (8:30 pm), and Croatian player Teresa Mrdeza (WTA – 199) nailed expressively fast victory (after 51 minutes) against Czech Denis Allertova (WTA – 346) with 6-1, 6-0.
On the second day of the tournament we are looking forward to the performance of last year’s winner of Croatia Bol Open, the No. 1 seed, Tamara Zidansek from Slovenia, who will play around 15:00 h (3 pm) on the main ‘Bluesun’ court against Mandy Minella (WTA-100), the winner of the first new edition of Croatia Bol Open 2016. It is interesting that home player Jana Fett at the main draw merged these two great players in the first round of the tournament. Jana Fett, who came to the tournament with WC, will play before Zidansek in the same court at 13:00 h (1 pm) against Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele (WTA-97). The home favourite Tene Lukas and No. 8 seed Laura Siegemund from Germany will play at 20:30 h (8.30 pm). It is totally worth to spend Wednesday afternoon around the main court of the Bluesun tennis center Zlatni Rat.
