Tena Lukas passed through the first round, Ajla Tomljanovic did not. Tena Lukas beat the Swiss Xenia Knoll 6:3, 6:1
“I played well and I am happy with my first win on the tournament” – said Lukas.
Ajla was unlucky with the draw but also during the match with a Greek Maria Sakkari who won with 6:4, 4:6, 6:1. Even though Ajla played very good tennis at moments, she is still not in her best form. Her game varied a lot and she struggled with the serve due to the last years shoulder surgery.
A win would have sent her directly to the quarterfinals because Belgian Alison van Uytvanck withdrew due to the injury, so Sakkari made it through without playing.
Through the whole last year you could not play due to the shoulder surgery. How happy are you with the return?
“I started to play in Acapulco in March, after that I went through the third round of Miami winning over some good players. For me that was a very good start. After that I dropped form and realized how hard it is to come back. But I wanted to play as soon as possible, anywhere.”
Doctors say that the shoulder problem appeared due to the too heavy racket and unsuitable strings? “I don’t like to think about the past, what happened, happened. That is an opinion of the doctor who did the surgery.I don’t want to lose sleep over that but look forward”
What is the hardest in return after such a long break?
“The hardest is that I do not feel on the same level physically. My shoulder is not fully ready and that is troubling me, especially with the serve. It is hard to watch the tournaments that I would love to play but I can`t. Father supports me and when I get depressed, he pulls me back into reality.”
Are the shoulder injuries now past?
“They should be. I need to listen to my doctors and to my body. If I feel any pain I must not force it.”
Where is your base now?
“Partly in Brisbane and partly on Florida. I spend more time in Australia when I play in a regional tournament down under. As for every Australian athlete it is hard to go back during the season because it is far away. But I like to do the training camp over there due to excellent conditions. I spend a lot of time in United States because Florida is an excellent base and suitable for traveling to tournaments.
Ajla`s performance in Bol was closely followed by her boyfriend, 19th player in the world, Nick Kyrgios who arrived in the last moment from Paris through Split and directly to Bol with the speedboat. He was accompanied by the tournament director Feliks Lukas who led him directly to the central court of the Bluesun tennis center Zlatni Rat.
